The first buyout window of the season is open, and we've already seen the Vancouver Canucks take advantage. Analysts believe the Pittsburgh Penguins are next.
Fixing Hextall's Mistake
When Ron Hextall acquired Mikael Granlund from the Nashville Predators at the deadline, everybody was confused. Paying a second round pick for a player who would widely be considered a cap dump was just truly mind-boggling asset management.
With Hextall having been kicked to the curb, and new President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas looking to make a mark in his new role, a Granlund buyout could be coming.
The buyout is incredibly favourable, as it saves significant cap space over the next two seasons, and would only cost $1.8-million annually for the two following seasons when the cap is due to go up significantly.

With the Penguins looking to be competitive soon, with their core rapidly aging, every ounce of cap space counts. It will be interesting to see if Dubas makes the move or not.
