The NHL Global Series was a massive success, however, it has now been revealed that the league screwed a Canadian team out of nearly ten-million dollars.
Toronto Maple Leafs Screwed Out of Nearly Ten-Million Dollars by the NHL and Gary Bettman
The NHL Global Series in Sweden featured four teams this year - the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Of the games between these teams, per NHL rules, some were treated as home games while others were treated as away games. For home games, the NHL would be required to pay the team the equivalent of the revenue of a normal home game, which differs per team.
For the Ottawa Senators, an average home game brings about $1.5-million in revenue. They got two 'home games' while they were in Sweden. For the Maple Leafs, that number approaches $4-million, however, they were given two 'away games'.
Essentially, in an attempt to save some money, the league screwed the Maple Leafs out of approximately $8-million.

Savvy Cost-Cutting, or Embarrassing Decision?
While it's not a bad thing for the league to save several million dollars, this type of move also shows teams that earn more money that it may not be worth it to participate in NHL outreach events.
In the grand scheme of things, a few million dollars isn't worth much to the league. The Maple Leafs refusing to participate in future events, however, would be terrible.
