Nikita Kucherov injury update: what two sources just confirmed
Nikita Kucherov left Jon Cooper and the Lightning waiting on a bigger question after Tampa Bay's overtime loss in Montreal.
The score stung on its own. Montreal took Game 3 by a 3-2 count in overtime and grabbed a 2-1 edge in the series, but the bigger story for Tampa Bay may be what happens before the next puck drop.
Kucherov absorbed a heavy hit during the game and the building exploded right away.
The sequence turned heads because he looked uncomfortable getting back to the bench.
That's where this gets real for the Lightning. When their top star is laboring through a shift, every line change starts to matter a little more.
The good news is he returned and finished the game.
That alone gives Tampa Bay at least some reason to believe this won't turn into a full absence.
But finishing the night and looking right are two different things.
The report out of the visiting room suggested Kucherov was still dealing with it after the final horn.

He said the Lightning would reevaluate everything ahead of Game 4, which tells you this is not being brushed aside.
That puts all the pressure on Tampa Bay's next decision. If Kucherov plays, the question becomes how close he is to full speed. If he doesn't, the entire top of the lineup changes.
And that's the part Montreal will watch closely.

A limited Kucherov can still make plays on the power play, but he's not the same threat if he can't separate off the rush.
The clip from the hit only adds to the concern.

He missed the contact, took the worst of the collision, and came back to the bench with a clear hitch in his stride.
Tampa Bay still has time to steady the series.
But this story has shifted from one overtime loss to the condition of the player who drives so much of their offensive push.
That's why Game 4 now starts with Kucherov, not the scoreboard. Until the Lightning know what version of their star winger they're getting, everything else sits behind it.
