Hertl, 27, has not requested a trade but is said to welcome one if the opportunity were to occur. He also has just one year remaining on his contract carrying a cap hit of $5.63 million. With the Sharks in no position to compete for a Stanley Cup any time soon, they may be best off trading the talented Czech forward and picking up future assets, and according to a new article in The Athletic that is exactly what they are attempting to do.
According to the article written by Kevin Kurz, the Sharks aren't opposed to be moving Hertl but it won't come cheap. Their reported asking price is a first-round pick, as well as a high end prospect and a player who will be NHL ready around the same time as the Sharks' best prospect, William Eklund. Kurz also reports that they want this prospect to be a center or defenceman.
This is a lofty asking price, though you can't blame the Sharks for trying to get as much as they can in this situation. Whether or not a team is willing to pay that price remains to be seen, but the fact of the matter is Hertl is a highly talented player and aside from Jack Eichel is the best player on the trade market right now. Expect to see him moved sometime between now and the trade deadline.
