The Arizona Coyotes have released a statement after the City of Glendale announced earlier Thursday that the upcoming season would be the team's last Gila River Arena. The City said stalled negotiations on a new lease and the desire to use the venue for other purposes led to its decision to let its agreement with the Coyotes run out after the 2021-22 season. The Coyotes also owe the city close to $1.5 million in rent.

"We are disappointed by today's unilateral decision by the City of Glendale to break off negotiations on a multi-year lease extension agreement," said Coyotes President and CEO Xavier A. Gutierrez. "We are hopeful they will reconsider a move that will primarily damage small business and hard-working citizens of Glendale. We remain open to re-starting good faith negotiations."

Gutierrez then insisted the team has no plans to move out of Arizona.

"Most importantly, the Coyotes are 100 percent committed to finding a long-term arena solution here in Arizona and nothing will shake our determination to do what is right for our organization, residents of the entire valley and, most important, our fans."

This is just the latest development in a long line of troubles for the Arizona hockey franchise. From issues paying players in the past, not communicating with players, a messy breakup with a former general manager, losing picks over breaking NHL draft rules, and drafting a player that the team ended up renouncing due to a spotty past involving bullying someone a disability. Where the team goes from here is anyone's guess.
