Calgary Flames set shocking ask for goaltender Jacob Markstrom

The price for goaltender Jacob Markstrom has been set by the Calgary Flames, and interested teams are going to have to brace themselves for sticker shock
It's no secret the Calgary Flames are looking to move on from goaltender Jacob Markstrom. His name has been involved in trade rumours since Calgary started to slide down the rankings in the 2023-24 regular season, and have only gotten louder since the Flames missed the playoffs. With the NHL Draft coming at the end of this month, and free agency opening on July 1, the Flames will likely want a deal to happen sooner rather than later, but it won't come cheap.
Bruce Garrioch covers the Ottawa Senators for the Ottawa Sun. The Sens are desperately trying to get a number on goalie for next season, and Markstrom is high on the list. According to Garrioch, the Flames want a big return.
"A league executive said they believe the Flames would likely be looking for a package that would include a first-round pick and high-end young prospect from the Senators in exchange Markstrom."
The Senators have the number 7 overall pick in this year's draft, an enticing spot for the Calgary Flames. However, Ottawa has to remove a goaltender from its books in order to take on Markstrom's salary, which carried a cap hit of $6 million dollars for the next two years.
"Markstrom is from Gavle Sweden, which is actually the sister city of Kingston Ontario. It's also a weather and eco system match to Eastern Ontario. Jacob is an avid hiker and has a Douglas fir tree farm back home. So Ottawa is a match on many levels, along with IKEA."
Ottawa has plenty of competition in the race to land Markstrom, with the New Jersey Devils considered the frontrunners, and the Toronto Maple Leafs also said to be interested in acquiring him. That's of course, good news for the Flames. The more people interested, the higher the offers go.
