Former Oilers draft pick Johan Motin gets lengthy suspension for nasty open-ice hit (w/)
Johan Motin, a former fourth round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers back in 2008, will be spending some time on the sidelines after a nasty hit near centre ice in the Finnish Elite League. Motin, who has been playing for HIFK Helsinki for the past three seasons, caught Miro-Pekka Saarelainen of the Lahti Pelicans with a hard hit that the league has deemed to be too high. Despite the fact that Motin has no previous disciplinary actions to consider, the league has handed him five-game ban. You can see several angles of the hit in the video below.
Saarelainen was not injured on the play. However, in its ruling, the league said the hit was directly to the head and was "reckless."
Motin had already sat for one game while the disciplinary committee was reviewing the play. He will miss four more games as a result. He received a two minute minor and a 10 minute misconduct for his actions during the game.
Motin played just one game in the NHL with the Oilers during the 2009-10 season. He completed three seasons in the AHL and ECHL before heading back to Europe, where he's been playing since 2012.
