One of those was the draft, which was pushed from its regular date in June to October. While he isn't asking for the same lengthy delay, Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman is hoping the league will push back the 2021 draft as well, in order to ensure all draft eligible players are able to get some playing time in prior, as many of their seasons have been delayed as a result of the pandemic.
«I would hope they push it back, and give us a chance to watch these kids and give these kids a chance to play and put their best foot forward leading up to the draft,» Yzerman told Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press on Monday.
It has been reported that the NHL has discussed pushing this years draft off until the summer of 2022, meaning they would have back-to-back drafts. While this certainly isn't ideal, it is only fair to the players, particularly ones in the WHL OHL as they have still yet to begin their seasons. Expect to hear more on this in the upcoming weeks and months.
