The Florida Panthers are looking at new ways to bolster the organization's development, and in turn create a more competitive NHL club. As such, the team has announced an innovative approach to goalie development. They are calling it a “goaltending excellence department.”

The coaching will be headed by long-time NHL goalie Roberto Luongo. He will be working with Florida Panthers goaltending coach Robb Tallas, AHL coach Leo Luongo, and legendary goalie coach Francois Allaire. Allaire was previously not employed by the organization, but he is joining the team as a consultant.

The new approach will be an aligned system that includes scouting, with hopes of developing goalies at every level of the franchise both on and off the ice.

The Panthers currently have Sergei Bobrovsky and Chris Dreidger as their one-two punch heading into next season. It is expected in the near future that Spencer Knight will be able to make an impact. The 13th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft was the highest goalie selected since Jack Campbell, who was selected 10th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars. Florida also has what could be the perfect backup to Knight when his time comes in Sam Montembeault, who has shown potential to be a decent NHL goaltender.

This new endeavor for our organization is incredibly special," said Luongo. "I'm honored to welcome Francois, whose impact on the goaltending position stands second to none. Each member of our goaltending excellence staff has traveled a different path and possesses a unique set of experiences and knowledge. I have a tremendous deal of respect for this group and couldn't be more excited for the future."
