According to former NHLer and Sportsnet Insider Nick Kypreos, talks between the NHL and the NHLPA have stalled.

There was reportedly zero dialogue between the two sides this past weekend, the first time that has happened in weeks. Kypreos mentioned that players have told him they have little choice but to sit and wait. As a result, he says the league could start as late as February 1, which could result in a 48-game season.

There have been talks for a while now the season could be as low as 48 games, but the league has held out hope that they could start games on January 1. That is starting to seem less and less likely, as the NHLPA seems to have zero interest in taking another 13 per cent pay cut and the two sides appear to be very far apart. This story appears to be far from over, and it remains anyone's guess as to when/if the 2020-21 season happens.
