The NHL has said for awhile and is continuing to say January 1 is their goal, but that date is creeping closer and closer and the NHL and NHLPHA have yet to come to an agreement on a financial arrangement. Johnston did mention however that the two sides are still grinding away trying to work out a deal. There are still many things in the way, with the newest being that the NHL has asked its players to take an additional 13% pay cut, which would be added on to the 10% cut they already agreed upon.
At this point, the league starting on January 1 feels almost impossible. As mentioned above, there are still multiple things for the NHL and NHLPA to sort out. On top of that, the league still needs to put together a plan on how they will restructure divisions to allow for less travel, and decide whether or not they are going to do bubbles again similar to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Rumours have been circulating that the 2020-21 season could be a 48-game season like we saw back in 2012-13.
