The Washington Capitals made a big change this offseason hiring Spencer Carbery as their head coach. One of their best players has now commented on his hiring and why things didn't click with former head coach Peter Laviolette.
Kuznetsov Takes A Major Shot At His Former Head Coach
In a new interview, Evgeny Kuznetsov talked about the season ahead. During the interview, he was asked about his former head coach Peter Laviolette, and why things didn't work out.
«There were many moments there (in the meeting),» Kuznetsov said during the interview and as translated by Google Translate. «I say, ‘You brought a coach who almost didn't fit the style, we had to rebuild.' Such moments as it were. ‘You paid me this money for something, right?' I say, ‘For what I did well.' And now [he] arrived, they tell me: ‘Listen, you don't need to do this – throw the puck into the zone, run, and [screen] the goalie.'
Kuznetsov does not seem to be a fan of his former coach. The Capitals played more of a defensive style that relied on forechecking under Laviolette which as Kuznetsov said is not his style.
«This is where everything went wrong in general, because we should each have our own role, everyone should fulfill their role, and everyone will be in demand from this role,» he said. «And when you carry a piano, and then they say to you: ‘No, no, let's play the piano today.' And the person has never played the piano, and they say to him: ‘Come on, play!'»
He refers to players being misused in roles that are not fit for him several times. This is often where coaches seem to fail trying to make the players they have fit their system as opposed to the opposite. Great coaches take what players they do have and develop a system that highlights their individual strengths.
Now new head coach Spencer Carbery seems to be on the same page as Kuznetsov heading into the upcoming season.
Capitals New Head Coach A Breath Of Fresh Air
After talking about the past Kuznetsov moved on to how things are under new head coach Spencer Carbery.
«He called (twice) on the phone,» Kuznetsov said. «He himself played in the East Coast (ECHL). Then [Carbery] coached there, then farm [Hershey] – and won the AHL (regular season championship) with them. He went through our entire system. Here he is just the person who probably has the same thinking as all the central [leaders].»
It sounds as though Carbery has taken his role very serious and gotten off on the right foot. Connecting with star players is essential for a new head coach. What about the system though?
«You go 2-on-1 – well, how can it be,» Kuznetsov said. «Well, you have to at least look at the pass, right? And they tell you: ‘Throw it at the blade and your partner will finish it off.' I can go to the [championship] region here, shoot, and live without any stress.»
Kuznetsov sounds pretty happy with the new system. A more free-flowing offensive style of hockey for the Capitals looks to be on the horizon. As preseason gets going it will be interesting to see how this translates. The Capitals will be looking for a big bounce-back season and that will start with players like Kuznetsov.
