Elias Pettersson is only a year away from free agency, and rumors about his departure from Vancouver are getting louder every day.

The latest speculation suggests that the Boston Bruins could be interested in acquiring the Canucks' number one center.

"Pettersson could serve as a viable Plan B for the Bruins, who are actively seeking a dynamic center presence following the retirements of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. While Lindholm remains their primary target, if the Bruins take a big swing, Pettersson's youthful potential and extended prime years could render him an appealing alternative choice for the team."

If he decides to leave the Canucks, it'll likely be for a top contender, and the Bruins are not far from that status.

Staying or Leaving?

Pettersson is an amazing player who could have high hopes of winning every year. However, since he joined the NHL five years ago, he hasn't been in the playoffs except during the bubble in 2020.

After a breakout season of 102 points, Pettersson could get an important contract, and he may want to wait and see if the Canucks have a concrete plan to win before deciding to commit long-term.

"One thing I would say to Canucks fans is, don't take it as he's not staying. I don't believe that's the case. Nothing in my conversation with him indicated that he's not going to stay there. But I think he wants to ensure that the team has the potential to win before committing to a long-term agreement."
