Gerard Gallant has been around the block and back again when it comes to coaching in the NHL, and he has no issue telling it like it is. After losing the last two games in their opening round playoff series against the New Jersey Devils, Gallant let his New York Rangers have it, calling it exactly as he sees it.
"Not good enough," said Gallant. "Not even close to good enough."
After winning the first two games in the series and handily outscoring the Devils 10-2, the Rangers squandered the early lead and taking two in New Jersey but losing the next two at home. Gallant said his players simply weren't dialed in and spent too much time arguing with officials.
"We didn't show up," Gallant said. "We didn't play hard enough. We didn't compete hard enough. All we did was yap at the linesmen for getting thrown out of the faceoffs."
The Rangers have a chance to get back into Thursday in game 5, which takes place at the Prudential Centre in Newark.
