New regulations in place for NHL players to travel to Canada

As NHL players are making arrangements to arrive in the hub cities of Toronto and Edmonton, the league is facing an important week regarding COVID-19 testing. Exhibition games will begin next Tuesday in both cities and there are regulations that must be met for players to travel to Canada.

On Monday, TSN's Ryan Rishaug reported on Twitter that it would be necessary for a player to obtain three negative tests 48 hours apart within 7 days in order to be able to travel to Canada.

This means that if a player tests positive after Wednesday or Thursday, they will not be eligible to travel to Canada in time for the exhibition games next week.

NHL players need 3 negative tests spaced 48 hours apart in the 7 days prior to travel to Canada. Any positive tests after Wed or Thurs this week and they won't hit that mark. Any positive tests, teams would likely re-test immediately to rule out false positives* but each test has turn around time, and there is little margin for error.
