League announces more positive tests for COVID-19
The National Hockey League has announced that more players who have taken part in Phase 2 of the league's Return to Play plan have tested positive for COVID-19. Here's what the NHL's Public Relations department said in a statement:
"As of Monday, June 29th, the NHL has had in excess of 250 players report to club training/practice facilities for optional participation in Phase 2 activities. There have been in excess of 1450 COVID-19 tests administered to this group of players. Those tests have resulted in a total of 15 players returning confirmed positive test results for COVID-19."
"In addition, since June 8th (the opening on Phase 2), the League is aware of 11 additional players who have tested positive for COVID-19 outside of the Phase 2 protocol. All players who have tested positive have been self-isolated and are following CDC and Health Canada protocols. The NHL will continue to provide regular updates on the number of tests administered to players and the results of those tests."
The league has not released any names, but it appears from the wording that there have been positive test results in players living in both Canada and the United States.
The NHL has set July 10th as the opening of training camps, with the league set to return for the 24-team playoff format somewhere around the end of July. The NHL has yet to name its two hub cities for the tournament, but it looks like the frontrunners are Las Vegas and Toronto.
