The KHL announced on Tuesday that they will have a four-team summer tournament in late August. The four teams involved will be SKA, Ak Bars, Metallurg, and Salavat Yulaev.

From August 19-23, Ak Bars will host a brand new tournament in the pre-season, which is being called the TANECO Championships Cup. The teams attending the tournament are the most recent winners of the Gagarin Cup, which is the name of the trophy awarded to the winner of the KHL season. The teams listed above are the most recent winners, therefore they will be the four competing in this summer's tournament.

The tournament will be played over the span of five days, in which every team will play three games in the group stage, and one additional game to determine the final places in the tournament. The team who finishes first will be rewarded with the Championships Cup. Of course, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Ak Bars is considering different options in regards to how many spectators, if any, they will allow at this year's event. The games will be broadcasted live.

This tournament is likely a way for the league to try and recoup some revenue, which was lost due to the pandemic that has affected everyone worldwide. It is also a way to get hockey back slightly sooner than expected for Russian fans. It remains to be seen how this tournament will work out and whether or not it will continue, but it is an interesting idea nonetheless.
