With NHL draft upcoming, Lafrenière wins big award

The likely soon-to-be first overall pick of the 2020 NHL draft, Alexis Lafrenière, received a big honour Thursday morning. The 18-year-old left winger was named the QMJHL's MVP for the 2019-20 season.

Lafrenière was having a monster season for the Rimouski Oceanic prior to the league being cancelled due to the pandemic, as he had 35 goals and 112 points in just 52 games. This comes after last season's output of 37 goals and 105 points in 61 games, which was also good enough to win the league MVP award. With today's award, he becomes the third ever player in the QMJHL to win the award twice, joining Sidney Crosby and Mathieu Chouinard.

The Saint-Eustache, Quebec native has been widely considered the consensus number one overall pick for quite some time now. Who he gets selected by, as well as when, is yet to be decided however, as the league has yet to confirm a draft date, as well as set the draft lottery rules. Regardless of when the decisions are made, you can expect Lafrenière to be selected number one overall.
