Seven players suspended in game-fixing scandal in Belarus
As we had reported earlier, Belarus Extraleague team HC Dinamo Molodechno was being investigated for match fixing. The decision from the Belarus Hockey Federation came down today, resulting in heavy fines and year-long suspensions for seven players.
According to the investigation conducted by both police and hockey officials, it became known that Vyacheslav Lisichkin, Sergei Sheleg, and Alexei Ivanov conspired to throw the game in return for financial rewards from unnamed sources and then recruited Stanislav Kuchkin, Nikita Ustinenko, Alexander Syrei, and Pavel Boyarchuk to join their conspiracy. The players were promised the equivalent of 7 to 15 thousand USD to split among themselves depending on the final result. As a reminder, Dinamo held a 5-1 lead in the second period over HC Mogilev and went on to lose 6-5. All the players involved have confessed to their roles. Ivanov, Ustinenko, Sheleg, and Syrei will still face criminal prosecution.
As a result the Belarus Hockey Federation has decided to suspend all seven players will be suspended, effective March 23, 2020 until May 31, 2021. They will also be fined 8100 BYN (Belarusian Ruble) equivalent to $3085 USD. The team will be 10800 BYN, equivalent to $4113 USD.
During the investigation, it also became known that former assistant coach Igor Krivoshlyk was found to have placed more than 20 bets on his team with various bookmaking companies during the season. He is suspended from all hockey activity indefinitely.
Three other players who were asked to participate in the conspiracy and refused, but did not inform the team, league, or the police, will not be suspended or fined.
