NWHL wants no affiliation with Barstool Sports

The National Women's Hockey League is making it clear it wants no affiliation with Barstool Sports. An apparent beef between the league and Barstool, home to the extremely popular hockey podcast Spittin' Chiclets, broke out after some NWHL players appeared on a podcast hosted by Barstool CEO Erika Nardini. The appearance prompted backlash from some fans and journalists who cover the NWHL who insist that Barstool and its President David Portnoy promote misogyny a d sexism, while Portnoy has been linked to racist statements in the past.

Following that backlash, Nardini released a video saying she would like to buy an NWHL team, something she believes can help grow the league and women's hockey in general.

After that video was released, NWHL player Saroya Tinker released a Tweet stating she and her fellow players wanted nothing to do with Barstool.

The NWHL itself later released its own statement saying it would never sell a club to an entity that did not support its value.

NHL writer Marisa Ingemi also reported that the NWHL "is making it clear to everyone in the league that Barstool does not have any future in the league. There has never been an application filed to even start any real talk about ownership. One source said a formal bid would be quickly rejected by the board."

There's no question a partnership with an organization like Barstool would help get more eyes on the sport of women's hockey. At the same time, the leagues public image would likely take a hit. That said, Barstool is excellent at bringing attention to itself and its partners and, quite frankly, this whole situation is a perfect example of that. Social media has been filled with mentions of Barstool since the original appearance of the NWHL players on Nardini's show, something the organization has run with as much as possible.
