NHL does not want hub cities' teams to play at home
On Monday the NHL is expected to announce two hub cities that will be used when play resumes. Each of the hub cities will host 12 of the 24 teams that have qualified to return to play.
TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that the “NHL's preference would be that a home team doesn't play in its own hub. That is to say if Vegas were to be a hub, the Vegas Golden Knights wouldn't play in Vegas, they would play in the other hub. That's the preference.”
With two cities being selected as hubs, it is anticipated that they will each be in a different conference. In order to avoid giving the hub city's team an advantage, the conferences may switch locations.
According to McKenzie, it is not a guarantee that the selected cities will be in different conferences. “It's entirely conceivable that both hubs could be in the West,” McKenzie added. “So let's say it's Vegas and Vancouver or Vegas and Edmonton--distinct possibilities. That would mean one of Vegas or Vancouver would have to be at home.”
Ten cities were originally proposed as candidates to be selected: Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Vancouver. McKenzie mentioned during his report on “Insider Trading” that Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Las Vegas were definitely still in the running and did not comment on the other cities.
