JAKE VIRTANEN OFFICIALLY CHARGED BY VANCOUVER POLICE

JAN 27, 2022  (14H08)      TIM TUCKER
Former NHLer Jake Virtanen is now officially facing a charge from the Vancouver Police Department.

"VPD: Jake Virtanen, 25, charged Thursday with sexual assault in relation to incident that occurred in Vancouver Sept. 26, 2017, when Virtanen was playing in the NHL," said Andrea Woo of the Globe and Mail on Twitter.

"VPD launched investigation in May 2021, after the now-23-year-old victim went to police. Virtanen not in custody."

Allegations of sexual assault against Virtanen surfaced on Twitter in 2021. A woman claimed she had been engaged in a conversation with him while he was playing for the Vancouver Canucks. He asked her to visit him at a hotel room where the assault allegedly took place. The woman is also suing Virtanen.

"A civil lawsuit was filed against Virtanen last May by a woman who alleged the then-Canuck had sexually assaulted her at a West Vancouver hotel in September 2017," said Woo.

Virtanen is currently playing for Moscow Spartak of the KHL after being bought out of the final year of his contract by the Canucks at the end of last season. The former sixth overall draft pick has nine goals and 16 points in 37 games.
