While he has not yet been signed, unrestricted free agent Patrick Marleau, according to Sportsnet, has a "burning desire to continue his NHL career," and his camp is confident he will do so.

“Part of the reason I think he didn't end up with a team to this point is he's being selective about where he goes, wants to stay close to home with his family back in San Jose,” said Sportsnet's Chris Johnston. “And he was focused on the Sharks into July, and ultimately they chose to go another direction. But he remains confident that he's going to get another job this season.”

Marleau, 40, has 1647 regular season games in the NHL. He's missed just one game in the last 10 years and has a consecutive games-played streak of nearly 800 games. With a minimal contract, it's not unreasonable to think the veteran could still contribute and certainly act as a mentor to younger players.

With one year left on his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marleau was sent to Carolina this offseason, along with a first-round pick, and immediately bought out of the remaining year, making him a free agent.
