SEATTLE KRAKEN RETIRE A NUMBER, MAY BE RAISING A STANLEY CUP BANNER THIS SEASON

OCT 24, 2021  (8H55)      TIM TUCKER
I'd be the first to tell you that I like the expansion to Seattle. I like the Kraken's name, logo and colour scheme as it's something different and a bit of a break from the traditional that we often see in the NHL. But this, this just seems really silly.

During their first ever home opener Saturday night, the Seattle Kraken retired the number 32, raising a jersey with the number on the back of it to to the rafters. "How's this possible?," you're likely asking, given this is the team's inaugural season in the NHL? Well, the number 32 has been retired to represent the Kraken being the NHL's 32nd franchise, as well as to honour the 32,000 fans who put down payments on season tickets when they first became available.

Also, the stupidity doesn't stop there. According to Sportsnet's Jeff Marek, the Kraken are intending to raise a Stanley Cup banner to the Rafters as early as this coming Tuesday. It will commemorate the 1917 Stanley Cup Champion Seattle Metropolitans and their victory over the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs are in Seattle Tuesday night for a game.

If this actually happens, it would be as dumb as the Nashville Predators raising a Western Conference Regular Season Champions banner in 2018. I get that the Kraken want fans to get excited and feel a sense of pride, but this just seems ridiculous.
