The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced on Wednesday that Florida Panthers forward Joe Thornton has been fined $1,875 for slashing Tampa Bay Lightning forward
Boris Katchouk.
The incident occurred late in the first period of Tuesday night's game during a puck battle near the Panthers bench. Thornton lifts Katchouk's stick, looks right at him, and slashes him right in the groin. Thornton received a two-minute minor on the play for slashing.
Thornton, 42, signed a one-year contract with Florida on August 13th. In three games with the Panthers so far, Thornton has no points, two penalty minutes, and is a minus-one.
