The Montreal Canadiens announced on Saturday that they've agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $7.7 million ($3.85 million AAV) with goaltender
Jake Allen.
His extension will
see him earn $4.4 million, including a $500,000 signing bonus in 2023-24 and $3.3 million, including a $1 million signing bonus, in 2024-25. It also includes a limited no-trade clause in both years of the deal.
With
Carey Price's career likely over, Allen is set to take on the starting role, or at least form a 1A/1B with
Samuel Montembeault, like they did during the 2021-22 season. The Canadiens have some solid goaltending prospects including Frederik Dichow,
Jakub Dobes and they still have
Cayden Primeau, but goaltenders take time to develop. Until someone is ready, Allen will hold down the fort.
Allen, 32, was traded to the Canadiens in September 2020 in exchange for a pair of draft picks. In 35 games for Montreal last season, the Fredericton native had a 9-20-4 record, along with a 3.30 GAA, a .905 save percentage and two shutouts.
