If P.K. Subban had his way, a playoff for the 2019-20 Stanley Cup would include all 31 teams in the league. He made the statement to ESPN Thursday on "First Take."

"It was kind of floated around. I remember around the pause time when everything kind of shut down, I saw a few things on social media and I like that."

"For my team specifically, we were pushing to make the playoffs down the stretch, so I would like to see our team have an opportunity to compete for the Stanley Cup, but obviously as days go by ... if (the resumption of the season) did happen, I would love to see a 31-team playoff and give those pesky Devils an opportunity (to bring) the Stanley Cup back home to New Jersey, so I'd love to see that."

The Devils were 13 points out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference when the NHL suspended play. Subban's remark about "making a push" was very optimistic with the team having just 13 games left, but New Jersey had not been mathematically eliminated from making the post season.

The most commonly suggested idea for a 2019-20 playoffs has been a 24-team format including every club with a .500 win percentage and better. There would be a best 3-of-5 opening round to determine the 16 teams going on. If that were to happen, and there's no guarantee the league returns in any fashion before the next one begins, New Jersey would not qualify.
