Hinch, Luhnow can still return to baseball in 2021
Whether or not Major League baseball is played in 2020, fans will see the return of two faces they never wished to. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, former Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow would fully serve their suspensions even if the MLB season is cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Olney said that the MLB believes that because both men were suspended to the end of the 2020 post-season as opposed to a specific number of games, they will view Luhnow and Hinch as having served their respective bans.
Both were handed one-year suspensions in January, following an MLB investigation that confirmed that the Astros stole signs using cameras during both the regular season and playoffs in 2017 when they won the World Series, and for part of the 2018 regular season.
The Astros were not stripped of their 2017 World Series title as part of their discipline for the scandal but were only fined $5 million and had to forfeit draft picks.
The MLB also said that any further violations by Hinch and Luhnow would result in an on the spot on the league's permanently ineligible list.
Houston has since hired Dusty Baker to take over as interim manager and James Click to be the team's general manager.
