Following the cancellation of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, players found themselves without play, and without pay.

Unfortunately, ECHL play is considered mid-level hockey, and thus players are not compensated nearly as comfortably as those at the higher tier professional levels. At the ECHL level, player salaries average around $560 per week, and are only paid during the regular and post-seasons.

At the time of the season's cancellation on March 15th, players were in anticipation of three more regular season paychecks, in addition to any potential post-season income they may have generated. While players often seek regular jobs in the offseason, the pandemic and mass layoffs across the world make that an all but impossible task.

As of Monday, April 1st, the ECHL and Professional Hockey Players' Association have announced the creation of a relief fund, partnered with Spittin' Chiclets, that will assist players and their families, following the cancellation of the season.

The Relief Fund, which can be donated to at the link below, has already received sizable donations, including $200,000 to start the fund, offered by the Professional Hockey Players' Association, as well as an additional $10,000 from CaniBrands, a CBD products company. The league also announced its intention to hold a series of auctions to raise money for the fund.
