Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel is opening up his wallet to help front-line medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. He's purchased 5,000 personal protective equipment masks to be distributed to local hospitals dealing with shortages due to large demand around the world.

Eichel bought the masks from Bauer, which has currently shifted a factory to making them instead of the usual hockey equipment. They would be the type that resemble hockey visors, but much longer. Eichel has a sponsorship deal with the company.

Eichel's mother is a nurse in Boston, although she recently took time off to take care of her husband who underwent shoulder replacement surgery.

Meanwhile, Jeff Skinner, Eichel's teammate, announced a $53,000 donation to the fund Sabres owners Kim and Terry Pegula started March 25th. Skinner's contribution, which coincides with the No. 53 jersey he wears for the Sabres, will be directed to essential employees who are fighting coronavirus and organizations that provide food to those in need.

Both Skinner and Eichel expressed sincere gratitude for medical workers' efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
