The Toronto Maple Leafs announced, Wednesday afternoon, that they have signed defenceman Filip Karal to a three-year entry-level contract and defenceman Kristians Rubins to a two-year entry-level contract.

The 20-year-old Karal has spent the last three seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League. He had career highs in both goals and assists with 12 and 37 respectively. The Czech Republic native represented his country in both 2018 and 2019 World Junior Championships, scoring one goal both years. The Maple Leafs selected him in the fifth-round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Rubins, 21, has been in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization for the past two seasons. He signed with the Leafs as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2018-19 season, and split his time between the Newfoundland Growlers of the East Coast Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). He spent this past season in the AHL, playing 47 games and putting up 14 points. Like Karal, Rubins also played in the World Juniors, representing Latvia in 2017.
