KHL's Admiral Vladivostok announces it will not participate in the league next season
Admiral Vladivostok, a team based in Vladivostok, Primorsky Krai, Russia, has announced it will not be participating in the 2020-21 season of the Kontinental Hockey League. The team's main sponsor, the area's regional government, has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Given that the main sponsor of the club is also experiencing crisis and probably will not be able to fully finance the performance of the Admiral in the Kontinental Hockey League, the club will not be able to comply with the League's minimum wage requirements for hockey players," said Admiral Vladivostok in a statement.
Any money the team has now will be donated to efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19.
The announcement will leave the league with 23 for the start of next season, unless a replacement can be found. It is assumed the team's players will become free agents, although that wasn't officially addressed in the statement. Admiral Vladivostok only joined the league in 2013 as an expansion team.
There is one North American currently listed on the team's roster; Sean Lalonde of Canada. He is a former draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks but played just one game in the NHL before moving on to Europe.
