As the NHL season remains suspended well into its third week, amidst the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), team and arena employees have hung in the balance, unsure of their future employment status.

Announced on Monday, both the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames organizations have officially announced
temporary staff reductions, as well as compensation rollbacks for those still employed.

As first reported by TSN's Frank Seravalli, the Oilers organization has issued a temporary staff reduction of 139 employees. The organization is also putting a compensation rollback in place for all continuing staff working from home.

The Oilers organization stated that a new fund ensures those facing layoffs will receive 75-90% of their pay.

Senior hockey and business executives throughout the organization are expected to forego 50-100% of pay through the pandemic.

Within minutes of the Oilers announcement, their Alberta rivals through the decades, the Calgary Flames also announced temporary layoffs, as well as reduction of pay.

The layoff will see 150 employees, which makes up 50% of the Flames full-time staff, temporarily without work for 60 days, effective April 13th. The organization has received authorization from Service Canada for a Supplemental Unemployment Benefit plan that will allow them to provide an Employment Insurance top-up payment to all employees affected by the temporary layoff.

The remaining 50% of the Flames staff have been advised to anticipate a 10-25% pay decrease, with executive management seeing the highest percentage of rollback.
