Former NHL goaltender Eddie Lack announces retirement

Former NHL goaltender Eddie Lack took to Twitter this afternoon to announce his retirement from professional hockey. He most recently played with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2018-19.

Lack played a total of 143 NHL games, most of which came with the Vancouver Canucks. He was at his best during the 2014-15 season, his second with the Canucks, where he posted a 2.45 goals against average along with a .921 save percentage and a 18-13-4 record. He also played with the Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames, and the New Jersey Devils.

What was appearing to be the start of a bright future fell apart quickly for Lack. He was never able to repeat the success he had with the Canucks on other teams. His retirement announcement on Twitter helped answer why, as he explained in a four-part video that his body, mainly his hip, has hindered him for the past six seasons.

“My hip issues have come to this point where I can live a normal life, which I am extremely grateful for. But unfortunately it's not good enough to play professional hockey. I am content with the decision, as I know that I have done everything in my power to be able to come back but it just wasn't meant to be. The last six years have been painfully frustrating for me. My mind wanted to play goalie a certain way, but my body wouldn't allow me to play that way,” Lack said in the video.

Lack also went on to thank fans of both the Canucks and Hurricanes, as well as the teams themselves. He says that he will continue to remain active on Twitter, which he has a massive following of over 150,000 people on, and that he is also working with the Arizona State University Men's Hockey Team. However, his main job now will be in real estate, which he is doing in Phoenix.

Though Lack wasn't able to play as long or as often as he would've liked due to injuries, he certainly made the most out of his hockey career. He became a well-known player in the hockey community because of his extremely charismatic personality. We wish Eddie all the best in his new path.
