While the New Jersey Devils haven't come out and said they are looking to replace interim General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, it does appear the organization is looking elsewhere as it prepares to name a permanent replacement. According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has now been interviewed twice for the job, with both interviews believed to have taken place before the NHL suspended play on March 12th.

Fitzgerald was named as an interim replacement for Ray Shero, who was fired as Devils' GM on January 12th of this year. At the time, the club said it would wait until the summer to name a permanent replacement.

Gillis served six years as the Canucks' GM from 2008-09 through 2013-14. It was perhaps the most successful era in the franchise's 50-year-history. The club won division titles the first five years and advanced to the 2011 Cup final that the Bruins captured with a Game 7 victory in Vancouver. However, the Roberto Luongo contract became a major issue for the franchise and the Luongo-Cory Schneider goaltending situation became a mess. When the Canucks missed the playoffs in the 2013-14 season, Gillis was fired, along with head coach John Tortorella.

Brooks stated he is unsure if Gillis is the leading or lone candidate for the GM position in New Jersey. However, the fact that he's been interviewed twice at least puts him near the top for contenders for the position.
