With players like Corey Perry and Eric Staal leaving the Montreal Canadiens in the offseason, GM Marc Bergevin knew he needed to add a veteran presence back to the team. So he went out and did just that.

The Canadiens have announced the signing of 33-year-old forward Mathieu Perreault to a one-year deal worth $950,000.

Perreault is a centre but has played mostly on the wing the last few years. He was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals. After a couple of seasons there, he went to Anaheim and then to Winnipeg, where he's been since 2014.

Once a consistent 40 plus points player, Perreault's production has dropped off in recent years. In 2020-21, he recorded nine goals and 19 points in 56 games. Perreault has played close to 700 regular season games in the NHL.
