LAVIOLETTE ON OVECHKIN'S STATUS AFTER LEAVING MONDAY'S GAME AFTER JUST ONE SHIFT

MAY 4, 2021  (8H28)      MIKE ARMENTI
There was a collective sigh of relief breathed after Alex Ovechkin, who was a game-time decision on Monday for the Caps, was labelled a "go" after missing his previous 4 games due to injury. That sigh of relief quickly turned into a gasp as Ovechkin left early in the first period and it was announced that he would not return.

With the way things had unfolded, many were concerned that Ovi may have come back from injury too soon and re-aggrivated whatever it was that was ailing him. Poor timing immediately before the postseason is set to begin, no doubt.

Well, thankfully, it seems as though Ovechkin came out of the game for precautionary reasons and not due to a re-aggrivation or worsening injury.

As NHL.com's Tom Gulitti reports, Caps head coach Peter Laviolette said that the situation was complicated. Ovi had felt good during the morning skate, but had not felt as good during warm-ups. Despite feeling at less than 100%, Ovechkin opted to play, but after trying things out for a single shift in the first period, he didn't feel good about continuing.

Laviolette seemed to confirm that he and Ovi knew that him coming out of the game earlier was a possibility. They felt that it couldn't hurt to dress him and test it out.

The Caps currently sit 1st in the East Division with just 4 games remaining in their regular season with the Pittsburgh Penguins nipping at their heels.

At this point, it may not be a bad idea to sit Ovechkin for the remainder of the regular season to ensure that he is closer to 100% for the postseason.
