Grubauer inks new deal with Seattle

Some very surprising news from day one of free agency, as Philippe Grubauer will not be returning to the Colorado Avalanche and has instead signed a six-year dea with the Seattle Kraken that will carry a cap hit of $5.9 million.

Grubauer, 29, really came into his own last season with the Avalanche, posting an extremely impressive 1.95 goals against average along with a .922 save percentage and a 30-9-1 record. Prior to the 2020-21 season, he had always been a goalie who was thought to have very high potential, but struggled with consistency and staying healthy in years past. Losing him is a massive blow to the Avs, who will now need to find a new number one goaltender for next season.

This signing helps explain some of the Kraken's questionable moves at the expansion draft last week, as it is becoming clearer and clearer they were just trying to keep their cap space open to sign some notable free agents. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate last seasons success, in which he was nominated for the Vezina Trophy, behind what will be a weaker lineup than the Avalanche's. Regardless of that, this is still a very solid pickup for the Kraken.
