Controversial draft pick Logan Mailloux speaks with the media, delivers disingenuous speech

The Montreal Canadiens' decision to draft defenseman Logan Mailloux is certainly a controversial one, given his recent indiscretions in Sweden. For those who may be unaware, Mailloux, who was engaging in consensual sexual activity with a female in Sweden, took graphic non-consensual photographs of the female and spread those photos around, again without her consent, to a large group of people within his circle.

Further to the graphic photos that Mailloux shared against the will of the female, he also took screenshots of her personal SnapChat profile, including her first name and age and spread those photos around as well so she was easily identifiable.

Following the incident, Mailloux was charged with defamation and offensive photography and told police multiple times that the young female was "vindictive" and was trying to ruin his life.

Once the story went public, Mailloux, presumably at the direction of his agent, attempted to renounce himself from the NHL Entry Draft, publicly asking teams not to draft him. That message was received by every team except the Montreal Canadiens during round one of the draft on Friday.

The Habs had a pre-prepared statement ready to go upon Mailloux's selection, which proves that the pick was pre-meditated. Quite frankly, this is a disgusting move by GM Marc Bergevin and the ownership group in Montreal.

Mailloux spoke with the media on Saturday, issuing a statement of his own prior to the start of the Zoom call, reading, by all appearances, a very disingenuous admission of guilt. See the link below for the full interview.

The Athletic's Arpon Basu wrote up a very insightful piece on this questionable and reprehensible pick by the Canadiens, centered around the fact that Mailloux's idiotic, insensitive, invasive, intrusive and illegal choice violated a woman's rights and completely victimized her and humiliated her and her family.

This pick by Marc Bergevin just proves that hockey has a very long way to go in terms of holding players and organizations accountable. It was an embarrassment to the league, the sport and the Montreal Canadiens' organization.

Mailloux has faced virtually no consequences for his actions and has instead been rewarded based on athletic potential rather than held accountable for his actions.

This is as bad or worse than the Arizona Coyotes' Mitchell Miller selection, except with zero consequences. Despicable.
