KRAKEN OWNERSHIP SAID TO BE 'INFATUATED' WITH THE IDEA OF TAKING CAREY PRICE

JUL 21, 2021  (7H45)      TIM TUCKER
We won't have to wait much longer to find out who the first members of the NHL's newest team will be, but in the meantime, speculation on who will be drafted by the Seattle Kraken Wednesday night continues. One of the biggest names on the exposure list who is still under contract is, of course, goaltender Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens. According to one report, the owners of the Seattle team want him badly.

"I know for a fact that the owners want him," said ESPN's Greg Wyshynski while appearing on Montreal radio station TSN 690. "They are infatuated with the idea of seeing Price's name behind the Kraken jerseys they will start selling [Wednesday] night. The people I've talked to say that there is some sort of church and state separation between the owners and the field hockey department. I think they [the Kraken] are going to select Price. Don't forget how attached Ron Francis was to having a veteran behind the net like Cam Ward in Carolina!"

By "church and state separation", Wyshynski is referring to the fact that ownership is leaving the decision on players solely in the hands of GM Ron Francis and his management team. That said, if Francis is aware of how badly the owners want Price, and there's no reason he wouldn't be, that may influence his pick from the Habs Wednesday night.

There are some concerns for Seattle's owners and management to consider. Price is said to have injuries to his hip and knee, with the knee possibly requiring surgery. However, as it stands right now, there's no word on how much time, if any, he might miss next season. Seattle could see this as a manageable risk, one they're willing to take to get star power and a bonified merchandise seller for their franchise.
