MATTHEW TKACHUK DRAWING SIGNIFICANT INTEREST IN CALGARY

20 jul 2021 à 15h08      MIKE ARMENTI
The Calgary Flames have reportedly been in contact with several teams regarding forward Matthew Tkachuk this summer.

Despite the fact that the Flames are not shopping the 23-year-old, that has not seemed to dissuade teams from reaching out to GM Brad Treliving, who is, of course, taking the calls and doing his due diligence, per The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta.

"Multiple sources have told me the asking price is astronomical," Pagnotta said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Tkachuk found his name in rumours earlier this summer after the Flames were eliminated from playoff contention. The big one was that Tkachuk is frustrated in Calgary and might enjoy the opportunity to play for his hometown St. Louis Blues.

Whatever "astronomical" is in terms of picks, prospects and perhaps a roster player remains to be seen, but Tkachuk has one season remaining on his current contract and carries a $7M cap hit. He will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer.

The big problem here is that Tkachuk's base salary this season is $9M, which means that his qualifying offer will be a big number. If he decides to go to arbitration, he could be awarded a short-term deal that walks him to unrestricted free agency.

So while it would appear that Treliving wants to keep Tkachuk on the surface, this astronomical price tag may just be his way of maximizing his return on a player that he is likely to lose anyway.

This will be an interesting situation to keep an eye on.
