DAVE PORTNOY, PRESIDENT OF BARSTOOL SPORTS, HAS HIS TWITTER ACCOUNT SUSPENDED TEMPORARILY

JUN 19, 2021  (11H03)      MIKE ARMENTI
Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy found himself temporarily banned from Twitter on Friday evening, with no clear reasoning behind the move, creating quite the stir on the social media platform.

Many of Portnoy's 2.5M followers were outraged by the decision, banding together to take over social media with the hashtag "#FreeDavePortnoy", presumably in attempt to have the suspension reversed.

A short time later, Portnoy's account was reinstated, though much of the damage had already been done, with some viewing the move as a poor one for the tech company's image.

While it isn't known exactly why Portnoy was banned in the first place, many have suspected that the ban was issued due to an exchange that Portnoy had with another user, during which time Portnoy told him "Let me drop my nuts on your head."

Fox News reached out to Portnoy to ask if he felt that that was the reason for the ban, to which he replied that the user had it coming, "and I would get suspended 100 times over to prove my point."

Fox News also reached out to a spokesperson for Twitter, but received the following response on the subject:

"We've no comment at this time however the account you reference has been reinstated."

Censorship is definite a hot topic in the social media community, with some believing that companies don't exactly know where the line is when it comes to knowing when or not to censor someone. Obviously, if you're not inciting violence or directing hateful and discriminatory language towards a group or an individual, I think you should be left to your devices.

Free speech, especially in the U.S., is something that people take seriously. In my opinion, when you're an influential figure, the same rules simply do not apply, in that you have to consider how your actions influence those around you and invite a similar reaction from your followers. While Twitter's actions may have been a bit hasty, some of the onus also has to be on Portnoy to just rise above it and realize that perhaps it isn't worth for a Sports Media giant to go to battle with a Twitter user, slinging insults in the public eye.
