Once free agency opens on July 28th, multiple teams will be free of contracts they bought out over the years, freeing up cap space in order to sign more players, or re-signing players on their roster.

Six names you may have heard of before are set to become unrestricted free agents this summer, even though some of them have retired, while one name has gone on to play in the KHL this past season. Let's take a look at the list of those players.

1) Mikhail Grabovski had his contract bought out by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013 and has been paid $14.3 million in total since. After the buyout he went on to play for the Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders. Grabovski is currently an assistant coach in the KHL with Dinamo Minsk.

2) Alexander Semin had his contract bought out in 2015 by the Carolina Hurricanes, who have paid him $14 million in total. He signed with the Montreal Canadiens in 2016, but it didn't work out and he headed back overseas to the KHL where he has been ever since.

3) Stephen Weiss was once a 28-goal scorer in the NHL with the Florida Panthers, and went on to sign with the Detroit Red Wings for five years at $4.9 million AAV. The contract included a no movement clause and a modified no trade clause, but after only two seasons, Detroit decided to buy him out, and have been paying him $10 million in total since 2015.

4) Mike Cammalleri. The next player on the list is yet another former Montreal Canadien. Cammalleri, 39, signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the New Jersey Devils in 2014. After the third year, the Devils decided to part ways with him and bought out the remaining two years of his contract. Since 2017, the Devils have paid him $6.3 million in total.

5) Benoit Pouliot. The former Montreal Canadien joined the Edmonton Oilers in the summer of 2014, signing a five-year, $20 million contract. The Oilers bought him out after the third year, and have been paying him $5.3 million in total since 2017.

6) Scott Hartnell signed a six-year contract with the Flyers in 2013, and was traded after the first year to the Columbus Blue Jackets. After three years with the Blue Jackets, the organization bought him out and have been paying him $5 million in total since 2017.
