ARBITRATOR CONFIRMS THAT TOM WILSON WAS USED AS A MEASURING STICK FOR KADRI DECISION

An independent arbitrator ruled to uphold the NHL's 8-game suspension for Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri on Tuesday, eliminating any possibility of Kadri being able to return before Game 7 of the Avs' 2nd round series against the Vegas Golden Knights (if the series gets that far).

The appeal was Kadri's second, after first appealing the Department of Player Safety's decision to issue the lengthy suspension to the Avs forward with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman late last month, unsuccessfully.

Shyam Das, the independent arbitrator in the Kadri hearing, provided his reasoning for upholding the suspension on Tuesday, with everyone's favourite bad guy, Tom Wilson's name appearing a few times in the official case document.

"This case, unlike [Tom] Wilson, does not involve use of what I concluded was an unsupported multiplier (3x in that case), nor does the evidence show, as in Wilson, a "wide disparity" between Kadri's 8-game suspension and the suspension(s) issued to other player(s) "under substantially comparable circumstances"," Das wrote. "On the contrary, as the Commissioner pointed out, in circumstances not unlike those in Wilson, the 8-game suspension issued to Kadri is very similar -- taking into account that it is being served in the playoffs -- to the 14-game suspension that Wilson received," he concluded.

Given Kadri's spotty history when it comes to undisciplined and dangerous plays occurring during the postseason, when emotions are at an all-time high, the independent arbitrator definitely got this one right in my opinion. Kadri's hit on St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk in round one was a dangerous and unnecessary play and although Kadri didn't officially qualify as a repeat offender, per the NHL's supplementary discipline rulebook, the fact that his history was taken into account is probably for the best to ensure that he'll think twice about delivering such a hit in the future.
