NHL reportedly missed out on billions due to attendance limits

According to an article from Sean Shapiro of The Athletic, the NHL missed out on nearly $3.6 billion in revenue during the 2020-21 regular season due to limited attendance in arenas.

This estimation by The Athletic was confirmed by both league and team executives to be in «the right ballpark,» was based on reductions in ticket sales, as well as in revenue streams such as concessions, parking and merchandise.

This season, the league had just over one million total fans across the United States as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a drastic drop-off from the 18 millions during the 2019-20 season as well as the 22 millions during the 2018-19 season who were able to attend games in person.

The good news here from a league perspective is that teams south of the border are beginning to allow more and more fans into their buildings as they continue to get more and more individuals vaccinated. Hopefully by the time the 2021-22 season rolls around there can be fans in all buildings throughout the league, perhaps even at full capacity.
