Nine years ago, the Montreal Canadiens hired Marc Bergevin to become the 17th general manager in franchise history. In his nine years, the Habs have made the playoffs five times including a trip to the Eastern Conference Final in 2014. Bergevin has made his fair share of big deals over the years, sending P.K. Subban to Nashville for
Shea Weber,
Mikhail Sergachev to Tampa Bay for
Jonathan Drouin, Alex Galchenyuk to Arizona for
Max Domi, and
Max Domi to Columbus for
Josh Anderson.
Bergevin will be in the final year of his contract next season, and the 55-year-old is discussing his future at the helm in Montreal with ownership according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
In the weekly Saturday Headlines segment, Friedman said: "Marc Bergevin and the owner Geoff Molson have been kind of talking about the future; how the owner feels, how the general manager feels, if there is an extension what it could potentially look like. So we'll see where those decisions go and where those conversations go, but I think they are underway about the GM's future with the Canadiens."
He had arguably his busiest, and best off-season prior to the 2020-21 season. He addressed four needs for the Canadiens. A back-up goaltender,
Jake Allen. A top-four defenceman,
Joel Edmundson. Size and grit up front,
Josh Anderson. As well as a top-six forward,
Tyler Toffoli.

The Canadiens GM also signed
Corey Perry and Michael Frolik only weeks before the season began. During the season he acquired depth for their playoff run by getting defencemen
Jon Merrill,
Erik Gustafsson, and forward Eric Staal. Oh, and we can't forget that he signed top forward prospect
Cole Caufield to his entry-level contract.
Montreal will be playoff bound no matter what occurs over the next week and a bit. Bergevin has set this team up to not just make the playoffs, but win a series or two. It's up to the team now to prove to their general manager that they can win.
