Former NHLer Brendan Leipsic signs new deal in Russia

Brendan Leipsic, who was essentially booted from the NHL following controversy over a private message group, has signed a new deal to remain in the KHL in Russia. Leipsic, who signed a one-year deal with CSKA Moscow after having his contract terminated by the Washington Capitals, has signed a two-year deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

At the end of the KHL season, and after going all the way to the Gagarin Cup finals with CSKA, Leipsic was traded to Metallurg just before the opening of free agency for the rights to Lias Andersson, who is currently playing with the L.A. Kings. The KHL rarely released financial details of a contract and hasn't in this case.

Leipsic was the host of an Instagram group chat which included his brother and most of his friends based out of Winnipeg. The group chat became the subject of controversy after a conversation was leaked to the public in May of 2020. Leipsic and others were shown making misogynistic and derogatory remarks about the girlfriends of Connor McDavid, William Karlsson, Chris Streveler, the wife of Tanner Pearson, and several other women. Leipsic also took shots at Madison Bowey, former teammate Jake Virtanen and his then-current Capitals teammates Tom Wilson, Garnet Hathaway and Nic Dowd. Leipsic apologized for his conduct and deleted his Instagram account. The Capitals placed Leipsic on unconditional waivers for purposes of terminating his contract, which happened 24 hours later.

Leipsic, a former third round pick of the Nashville Predators, had a decent season in the KHL in 2020-21, managing 11 goals and 24 points in 42 games.
