Yesterday, there were reports that ESPN was targeting NHL icon Wayne Gretzky to be one of their lead broadcasters for the 2021-22 season. Since then, The Great One has reportedly turned them down, but may still land a broadcasting gig for the upcoming year.

According to the New York Post, Gretzky may be headed to TNT Sports as an analyst for its NHL studio coverage. His role would reportedly be similar to Charles Barkley's of the NBA, and his salary if he were to do so is expected to be around $5 million per year.

ESPN was reportedly willing to pay Gretzky $2 million per year but were outbid by TNT. Both networks will takeover the rights that were previously held by NBC, starting next season. Obviously, adding a prolific player like Gretzky would be huge for ratings and would help expand the game in a big way. Bringing him on as an analyst despite the heavy price tag is a no brainer.
