RANGERS OWNER JAMES DOLAN EXPLAINS WHAT WENT IN TO THE DECISION TO DISMISS GORTON, DAVIDSON

When New York Rangers owner James Dolan decided to oust team President John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton, it's safe to say that a large contingent of the broader hockey community's jaws nearly hit the floor. Frankly, it was a move that not many saw coming, especially with just a handful of games remaining in the season.

Typically, a move of this nature is an offseason occurrence. However, according to Dolan himself, it was a move that he had pondered earlier this season.

"I saw a weakness in the team that was not being addressed, and I knew it needed to be," Dolan told the New York Post's Larry Brooks on Thursday. "I knew that we were missing a key component to us being a Stanley Cup contender.

"And that is the overall spirit and culture that goes with being a team. I believe that as good of a job as JD and Jeff have done, in speaking with them, it is clear to me that Chris Drury was going to be the right guy to lead the team forward."

According to Dolan, the move had nothing to do with the statement issued by the Rangers, directed at the league and George Parros in the wake of the Tom Wilson incident, as Parros failed to suspend the Caps forward for his reckless actions. He suggested that the move was long overdue and that a stretch of games at the most critical point in the season was the final straw.

"I started thinking about it 20 or 25 games ago at a time when the team really needed to show heart," Dolan told Brooks. "And we had key games - I won't be specific - where we had to show up and had to come out strong, and even if we lost, it had to be our best effort.

"And we clearly had nowhere close to our best effort."

The Rangers, who won the draft lottery and the right to select franchise player Alexis Lafrenière in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft were expected to be a postseason team, at least in Dolan's eyes.

It's difficult to accept that the Wilson incident had little or nothing to do with the decision - especially given the convenient timeline of the Davidson and Gorton dismissals, but Dolan has held firm to his story thus far.

With Drury now at the helm in New York, it will be interesting to see how he addresses the aforementioned team needs, as players with heart and absolutely no quot seem to be the focal point moving forward.
