Defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson, who has played more than 800 NHL games throughout his career, is considering leaving the league at the end of this season. That's according to a report by Aftonbladet, which says the the 33-year-old is looking at playing for HV71 in his home country of Sweden in 2021-22.

Hjalmarsson, who is an assistant captain with the Arizona Coyotes, was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2005. It is the only other team he's played for in the NHL and he won three Stanley Cups with Chicago before being dealt to the Coyotes in 2017.

The interesting part about all of this is should Hjalmarsson decide to play for HV71, he would not be playing in the top league in Sweden. HV was relegated from the SHL to HockeyAllsvenskan at the end of 2020-21. It is the team's first time being outside of the top-tier SHL and Hjalmarsson would certainly be a nice addition as it hopes to climb its way back in. Hjalmarsson's current contract is for $5 million per season (AAV). In 41 games in 2020-21, he has no goals and five assists.
